- Once shots began falling in the second half, the Baldwin High School girls’ basketball team rolled to its first-round sub-state win at home Tuesday night. The Bulldogs put Perry-Lecompton away by outscoring the Kaws 35-7 in the second half. The Bulldogs beat the Kaws 50-22 to advance to Friday’s Class 4A sub-state semifinal game.

- SALINA — Without its top competitor, this year wasn’t Baldwin High School’s best here at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament. However, it wasn’t all lost as three first-time wrestlers won their first-ever state matches.

- SALINA — Andrew Morgan has improved from a below .500 freshman to a fifth-place finisher in two years as a Baldwin High School wrestler. His third time at the Class 4A state tournament here was his best. Morgan ended his junior campaign with his first-ever Class 4A state medal, but he wanted a better finish.

- Plans for a community garden in Baldwin City have been in the works since 2008, but local gardeners will have their first chance to see what they can grow this April.

- Mike Carriker and Merle Venable will be headlining this year’s Baldwin Education Foundation Luncheon. The Baldwin High School alumnus and distinguished BHS football coach will be honored at the fifth annual event, which is set for noon March 10 at Stony Point Hall.
- U.S. Highway 59 paving to begin this summer

- Southern Douglas County should expect to see the northern portion of the new U.S. Highway 59 take shape this summer. Although the extensive project to build a new four-lane highway from Interstate 35 to Lawrence won’t be completed until 2012, the Douglas County portion will see pavement laid this year.

- Turner Gill, University of Kansas’ head football coach, was among the roughly 125 people in attendance at the annual awards dinner hosted by Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce Saturday at Stony Point Hall.
- Baldwin First UMC to include ‘safe place’ wording in welcoming statement

- After a unanimous vote Jan. 24 by the council of the Baldwin First United Methodist Church, BFUMC became the first church in Baldwin City to include a welcoming statement acknowledging it as a “safe space.” A safe space means a place that is openly welcoming of all people, especially in terms of sexual orientation.

- LENEXA — Despite a hard-fought game against the favored home team, the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball season ended here Monday night in the Class 4A sub-state. After pulling within four points following a Caleb Gaylord three-pointer, the Bulldogs were unable to score again during the final minute.
