With the filing deadline approaching later this month, it appears there might be openings on the Baldwin City Council and USD 348 Board of Education. Both local governments will have more than half of their positions on the ballot in the spring city/school elections.

It’s time for optimism and hope that the New Year will bring us 12 wonderful months. Yep, 2011 is here. It came quickly. It doesn’t feel like 2010 is done, but it is. Now it’s time to move ahead and dream about what could be for this year. I thought I’d share a few of my New Year’s resolutions, wishes and predictions for 2011.
Baldwin High’s Austin chosen for annual Shrine Bowl

Mike Berg’s Baldwin High School football squad will be sending another offensive lineman to the Kansas Shrine Bowl. Jesse Austin will be the Bulldogs’ fourth Shrine Bowl selection during the last six years. Austin, a senior at BHS, was recently chosen for the 2011 Kansas Shrine Bowl.
New year — same results for BHS girls

EUDORA — It didn’t take long for the Baldwin High School girls’ basketball team to shake off its rust after returning from Christmas break. BHS needed only 16 minutes. The Bulldogs worked out the kinks here Monday night after the first half, as they used 10-0 and 11-0 runs to start the third and fourth quarters to get away from the Cardinals in the second half.
Staff reduction, transportation decisions next for school board

When August rolls around, USD 348 will be operating two elementary schools, or half as many as its most of the last decade. During the next seven months, school district officials and staff members will be planning and executing the consolidation. Some changes, such as classroom layouts, have already been planned.
Time for Baldwin City residents to Take Charge

For the next nine months, the city of Baldwin City is asking its residents to be more energy efficient in hopes of winning a $100,000 grant. From last Saturday until Sept. 30, Baldwin City is one of 16 cities in the state participating in the Take Charge Challenge.
