Behrens hits game winner; BHS boys’ rally falls short against Cyclones

Boys basketball

On the brink of being blown out, the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball team came roaring back in the fourth quarter at home Friday night. In the end, the Bulldogs couldn't catch Ottawa as the Cyclones (15-3) ruined the Bulldogs’ (7-11) senior night, winning 55-44.

At the end of the third quarter, the Bulldogs trailed 42-21 after Ottawa hit five three-pointers during the period. Ottawa’s Semi Ojeleye drained four long-range shots in the third quarter.

Baldwin still trailed by 21 early in the fourth quarter before going on an 18-5 run during a 4:42 stretch. Freshman Cornell Brown and Justin Vander Tuig combined for 14 points during the spurt.

Ojeleye led all scorers with 31 points. Vander Tuig led Baldwin with 15 points.

Girls basketball

Myranda Behrens waited until the perfect moment to score her last basket of the night — with 1.3 seconds remaining — at home Friday night.

The Baldwin High senior’s layup was the game-winning basket. Behrens broke the tie and gave Baldwin a 36-34 victory over Ottawa on senior night.

Behrens had a similar play earlier in the quarter, but was called for an offensive foul. On the final play of the game, she got the basket and a free throw after a blocking foul was called. She missed the foul shot and the final shot by Ottawa missed.

Baldwin’s three seniors combined to score 26 of Baldwin’s 36 points in their final regular season home contest.
