City council extends deadline for unsafe structure

Owners of a building deemed to be an unsafe structure in downtown Baldwin City have another 30 days to come up with a plan to fix it — whoever those owners might be.
BHS volleyball team falls to Spring Hill in three games

SPRING HILL — Baldwin High School’s varsity volleyball team started a busy week with a disappointing loss here Tuesday night. The Bulldogs will play a handful of matches during the next six days, including a match at Tonganoxie tonight. They will also host the Baldwin Invitational on Saturday, so, they were hoping to use Tuesday’s match as a springboard for the week.
Bulldogs nearly defeat De Soto, drop two contests

Through 60 minutes of action, the Baldwin High School soccer team looked as if it might pull off an upset at De Soto Tuesday evening. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the next 20 minutes went in the Wildcats’ way. The Wildcats scored four late goals to win 4-1 over the Bulldogs, who fell to 2-2 on the season.
Opening meet postponed; BHS teams sweep competition

GARNETT — It took two days to complete the first cross country meet of the season, but the Baldwin High School teams easily won it here Friday. On Thursday, the Anderson County Invitational began, but storms soon rolled through the area. After the junior varsity girls’ race finished, lightning delayed the JV boys’ race. Nearly 45 minutes later, the meet was postponed to Friday.
BHS football team crushes Paola

PAOLA — Josh Hoffman and Ryan Rogers helped the Baldwin High School football team turn back the clock — two years — here Friday night in the season opener. The pair of senior running backs provided most of the offense on the ground and through the air as the Bulldogs stomped Paola 32-14. The Panthers were ranked as high as No. 2 in some Class 4A preseason polls.

Public invited to BESPC open house

On Aug. 31, the new Baldwin Elementary School Primary Center opened its doors for the first time to its students. To commemorate the opening of the new school, there will be a public open house from 7-9 p.m. Sept. 15 at the school, located at 500 Lawrence Street.

Neis year for new police chief

Police Chief Greg Neis has just finished his first year at the helm of the Baldwin City Police Department and it’s been a good one. It’s also been a new experience. Neis’s career in law enforcement, which began in 1977, has included stints with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department and 13 years with the Eudora Police Department, the last five as sergeant.
Road work hits ‘back way’ to Lawrence, too

Motorists taking the “back way” to and from Baldwin City will have to make adjustments after road work started along the stretch Tuesday. Crews will be doing pavement milling and overlay work on County Roads 1055, 458 and 460 for most of the month of September.
