BHS volleyball fall in sub-state opening round
Although the Baldwin High School volleyball team’s season ended quickly at sub-state Saturday, coach Kelly Brown wasn’t disappointed in the match or season.
The Bulldogs (17-20) were the No. 5 seed in Topeka-Hayden’s regional bracket. They played De Soto, who had narrowly beaten the Bulldogs twice within the last three weeks. De Soto won in straight games, 25-17 and 25-17, ending the Bulldogs’ season.
“We had a great season,” Brown said. “On Saturday, we talked to the girls after the match, and they all had smiles on their faces. They all knew that they had a good season. They were all very positive at the end of the day.”
On Saturday, Baldwin was missing one its key players in sophomore Monica Howard. She suffered an ankle injury 11 days before to the sub-state tournament. Although she played in matches before Saturday, the injury got worse and she was unable to play in the sub-state.
“We played really well on Saturday,” Brown said. “Monica Howard was out with an injury and that definitely hurt our offense a little bit. We had to go with a new line up, which threw the girls off a little bit, but we still played well.
“She’s been the key piece to our offense all year. Katie Kehl stepped up and played well. Other girls did some good things, too. We really needed Monica in there to play defense, too.”
The No. 1-seeded Hayden beat De Soto 25-15 and 25-9 in the semifinals before winning the tournament with a 25-5, 25-14 victory over Ottawa.
Saturday’s contest was the final contest for seniors Ramie Burkhart, Claire Glover and Lyndsey Lober.
“It’s sad when you have a player like Ramie, who you have to let go of. It will be hard to lose her,” Brown said. “She has been such a key piece of our team. We will miss Claire and Lyndsey, too.”
Burkhart was chosen to play in the 2010 Missouri-Kansas All-Star Match. The banquet is at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at Peirson Hall on the campus of UMKC. The match is Nov. 14 at Avila University. The small class match will start at 6 p.m. with the large class match at 7:30 p.m.
