Baldwin City man to face trial in bicycle hit and run

A Douglas County judge on Wednesday ordered a 48-year-old Baldwin City man to face a trial for a July 15 incident in which a Lawrence bicyclist was injured south of Lawrence.

BHS volleyball squad nabs three all-league selections

A trio of Baldwin High School volleyball players earned postseason honors from the Frontier League coaches. Senior Ramie Burkhart led the Bulldogs as a first-team all-league selection. Junior Kaysha Green and sophomore Monica Howard were chosen as honorable mention all-league players.
School board eyes land donation to help with intersection upgrade

The Baldwin USD 348 Board of Education indicated it would donate right of way to help secure a Kansas Department of Transportation grant to improve the U.S. Highway 56/Lawrence Street intersection. KDOT is currently soliciting grant applications for roadway improvements, such as the U.S. 56/Lawrence Street intersection, along qualifying state and federal highways.
BCRC interested in old BESPC

Steve Friend has an interest in the former Baldwin Elementary School Primary Center at 700 Chapel Street as a possible community center. Friend, the director of the Baldwin City Recreation Commission, said the BCRC would use the building for many of its functions and community events.
Familiar Frontier League foes will battle Friday night

Mike Berg knows his first win of the 2010 season means nothing heading into Friday night’s contest. On Sept. 3, his underdog Baldwin High School football team traveled to highly-ranked Paola hoping to bounce back after a dismal 2009 season. After 48 minutes of in-the-trenches football, his Bulldogs emerged with an overpowering 32-14 victory.
Special teams, defense give boost to BHS offense

KANSAS CITY, Kans. — Baldwin High School’s football rushed for 450 yards here Saturday night, but it was defense and special teams that won the contest. The Bulldogs’ offense scored touchdowns on seven of its first eight possessions. Their ground attack pounded Kansas City Sumner all night and couldn’t be stopped.
School board public hearing scheduled for tonight

With a large crowd expected at tonight’s Baldwin School Board public hearing, Superintendent Paul Dorathy wanted to give some instructions to patrons, while presenting facts about the proposal to close Marion Springs and Vinland elementary schools. The public hearing will start at 7 p.m. in the Baldwin Junior High School auditorium.
Cat fight wakes couple before house fire

Brent and Lynnette Ojanguren woke up to their cats fighting just in the knick of time early Sunday morning. Moments after checking on their cats, the Ojanguren’s house at 217 Dearborn Street went up in flames. Firefighters arrived shortly after the 911 call, but the house was destroyed by the fire.
Zuzzio named 4A track coach of the year

Ted Zuzzio was honored by the Kansas Track and Field Coaches Association earlier this fall. The longtime Baldwin High School girls’ track and field coach was named the 2010 Class 4A coach of the year. Zuzzio’s Bulldogs won the 4A state championship in May.
