School board holds off on naming facility policy

Scott Lauridsen’s idea to honor his former Baldwin High School football coach may have hit a snag within the Baldwin School Board. In January, Lauridsen mentioned the idea of naming the sports complex north and west of BHS after longtime coach Merle Venable.

Is the Baldwin High School girls’ basketball program cursed? Two years ago, I wrote a column about the possibility of BHS coach Eric Toot being cursed. He’s had several successful teams during his tenure as girls’ and boys’ coach at BHS. Yet, no trips to state for the alumnus.
BHS girls fall one win short of state

BASEHOR — Three-pointers weren’t falling here Saturday night for the Baldwin High School girls’ basketball team. Despite averaging more than three per game during the season, the Bulldogs couldn’t seem to find their touch from outside in their Class 4A sub-state final. They made two of 21 three-point attempts Saturday in their 46-37 loss to the hometown Basehor Bobcats.

Murphy’s Lumberyard opener was a big splash

Organizers wanted the first-ever exhibit at the newly renovated Lumberyard Arts Center to make a big splash. It worked, as Rosemary Murphy’s inaugural event Sunday was more like a tidal wave.
School board eyes budget cut possibilities

With hundreds of thousands of dollars already cut from last year’s budget, the Baldwin School Board is beginning to prepare for possible cuts next year. On Monday night, Supt. Paul Dorathy said the district has lost $933,000 from its budget, but that doesn’t include the reallocation of funds to pay for health insurance for all full-time employees.
BHS wrestling squad excited about next year’s potential

Although the Baldwin High School wrestling squad proved any preseason rankings wrong, coach Kit Harris is excited about the possibilities next year. In 2009, the Bulldogs finished 22nd as a team at the state tournament. They returned only three state points from that team this season.
BHS boys, coach disappointed with 6-15 season

Baldwin High School senior Camdon Schwartz didn’t dream of finishing his final basketball season 6-15, but he’s coming to terms with it one week later. Schwartz helped the Bulldogs to a 12-9 record a year ago, but had goals of a better season this year. However, the Bulldogs struggled down the stretch in the Frontier League, which was arguably as good as it’s ever been.
