SALINA — Josh Hanson saved his best — state tournament — for last here Saturday. In two previous trips to the Class 4A state meet, Hanson returned home empty handed. The Baldwin High School senior was determined to leave this year’s event with a medal.
BHS boys’ season ends with ‘tough loss’ to Sumner

KANSAS CITY, KAN. — With the odds stacked against them, the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball went out swinging here Tuesday night. Entering the first-round sub-state contest, the No. 7-seeded Bulldogs (6-15) were squared up against the No. 2 seed Sumner Academy (16-4). They were also playing in Sumner’s home gymnasium.
Soden ignites Bulldogs’ crowd to help BHS finish ninth

SALINA — Although Baldwin High School freshman Bryce Shoemaker won a state title, it was Colby Soden who stole the show here Saturday morning. The Baldwin High School junior electrified the Bulldogs’ crowd with an upset victory over Eudora’s Tim Wright in the second round of the consolation bracket.

BHS girls sweep De Soto with sub-state rout

After a disappointing loss on senior night, the Baldwin High School girls’ basketball team won its final home contest Monday night. On Thursday night, the Bulldogs hosted Ottawa for their regular season game. The Cyclones finished unbeaten in the Frontier League, as they beat the Bulldogs 55-45.

Performing Arts Center bids approved by school board

It took nearly 16 months after voters approved the November 2008 bond issue for the performing arts center bids to be approved by the Baldwin School Board. On Monday, the school board took the first step toward construction happening on the new facility.
Murphy to make history with Lumberyard exhibit

History will be made at the Lumberyard Arts Center Sunday when local artist Rosemary Murphy has the first-ever exhibit in the recently completed art gallery.
Shoemaker takes state

Bryce Shoemaker is used to winning state titles, but Saturday’s was a first for the accomplished Baldwin High School freshman. During his illustrious youth career, Shoemaker won four Kansas Kids’ State Wrestling championships. He also finished third and fifth during two other seasons as a youth wrestler.
Council sends regulations back to planners

It took an interesting vote, but as expected the Baldwin City Council returned a 250-page document on zoning and subdivision regulations back to the planning commission for more work at Monday’s council meeting.
