- WICHITA — Tony Weiss hit the track running … fast Friday morning at the state track and field meet. He continued running fast through Saturday afternoon. In fact, he ran his three fastest times in his trio of races during the weekend.

- WICHITA — With a school record set Friday afternoon, Baldwin High School senior JaBryanna Wellington took the track here Saturday evening with one goal … a state championship. Less than five minutes later, she killed two birds with one stone. Wellington anchored the girls’ 1,600-meter relay to victory in the Class 4A race.

- WICHITA — Ted Zuzzio has been coaching Baldwin High School track and field twice as many years as many of his athletes have been alive. To be exact, Zuzzio just completed his 34th year at the helm. It was arguably his most accomplished season as the Bulldogs’ coach, as his girls’ team brought home the first-ever Class 4A girls’ state championship Saturday.

- WICHITA — Katie Kehl may have broken her own shot put record once again, but Ramie Burkhart’s hurdle race might have been the most important event of the state track and field meet for the Baldwin High School girls’ team.

- Around 50 times a year Thom Weik, Lawrence resident, steps outside his normal life in the 21st century and travels back 150 years to the time of the Civil War. Weik is a six-year veteran to Civil War re-enactments who travels all over the country to be a part of what he calls “living history.”

- WICHITA — Carol Whaley was more mentally prepared for this year’s state meet than she was a year ago as a freshman. Prior to last year’s 3,200-meter relay, Whaley’s nerves were at an all-time high. She went from being a junior varsity runner early in the season to a runner on one of the top relay teams in Class 4A.
- E-waste to be included in city-wide cleanup June 12

- Baldwin City residents have become accustomed to getting rid of tons of junk every June during the City-Wide Cleanup, but this year they’ll be able to do even more by getting rid of e-waste safely. The cleanup is set for June 12 and residents can bring all sorts of unwanted items to the power plant at 10th and Orange streets that day.

- Baldwin City resident Becky Henderson will be on the game show Jeopardy Monday and a watch party is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lodge, 502 Ames.

- There will be the standard fare for Thomas the Tank Engine’s two-weekend stay in Baldwin City that starts Friday. That includes plenty of people, possibly as many as 20,000.

- To the editor: This is regarding the group of people advocating to close the rural schools. We obtained a report from the Douglas County Courthouse that states the urban Baldwin City limit patrons pay a grand total of $30,858,321.00 in real estate, state assessed and personal property tax.
