- Five Baldwin High School wrestlers competed at the nation’s toughest scholastic tournament last week and four came away with at least one victory. The quintet of Bulldogs headed to Fargo, N.D., for the national freestyle and Greco-Roman tournament. Four of the Bulldogs wrestled in the younger division, cadets, while the other bumped up to the juniors.

- For Julie Hill and Molly Bostwick, running a 13.1-mile race was easy. At least that’s what the pair of recent Baldwin High School graduates said about their half marathon in San Jose, Calif. They ran the long distance race more than two weeks ago and each of them enjoyed the experience.

- Vinland Fair’s 103rd run to unfold Aug. 12-14

- For the 103rd year, the Vinland Fair will be presented Aug. 12 -14 at the fairgrounds north of the Vinland Elementary School. Preparations are underway, with the grounds cleanup scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 7 and the department superintendents’ exhibition building arrangement at 7 p.m. Aug. 10.

- Although there’s mudslinging and massive campaigns in some primary elections, it’s been a quiet one for TerriLois Gregory and Scott Barnhart. Gregory, of Baldwin City, and Barnhart, Ottawa, are squaring off Tuesday for the Republican nomination for the 10th District House of Representative seat currently held by Rep. Tony Brown, D-Baldwin City.

- Yes, that’s Scott Mock’s 1969 Camaro in this month’s issue of Hot Rod Magazine. It’s a dream come true for the Vinland resident. “Hot Rod is kind of the premier magazine for gear heads,” said Mock. “Everyone wants to be a magazine car. It’s kind of like a model getting in Playboy or Vogue or one of those magazines.”
- Massive crane begins heavy lifting

- Have you taken a drive by the Baldwin High School and Baldwin Junior High School complex recently? If so, you’ve probably noticed the large crane located between the two buildings. The massive crane came into town last week for the project that will soon involve large 56 foot high pre-cast concrete walls. However, those aren’t here yet.

- To the editor: What has happened to this small town, I must ask? It seems to have really stemmed from the fact that patrons got involved when the topic came up about cutting seventh-grade sports.
- School district budget looks to jump 7.497 mills

- For the second straight year, the Baldwin School District mill levy might be taking another large increase. A week ago, the Baldwin School Board approved the 2010-2011 budget for publication. The school board held a short, special meeting July 22 just to approve the budget.
