Vinland’s Thomas headed to Ethiopia during July

Alica Thomas, fourth/fifth grade teacher at Vinland Elementary School has been invited to participate in “Ethiopia for Teachers” this summer. She will spend the month of July with 12 other American educators in Ethiopia to study the African nation’s language and culture and develop classroom lessons for U.S. school children.

Fireworks safety

Sunday is the Fourth of July and that means fireworks. Everyone should be aware of the laws regarding fireworks in Baldwin City. Legal shooting days are July 1-4 and times are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 1-2 and 8 a.m. to midnight on July 3-4. The State Fire Marshal gives the following advice on fireworks.

Toot brings in college coaches for BHS boys’ camp

Eric Toot altered his summer camp this year, but was pleased with its results, as well as the progress of his players this summer. This year marks Toot’s fifth as coach of the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball team. Each summer he’s adjusted his players’ workout and their camp, but this year he tried something completely new.
American Legion baseball squad improving

For the first time in years, Baldwin City has an American Legion baseball team, which consists of many players from the Baldwin High School varsity squad. This summer nine BHS players who were on the 2010 team are currently on the Baldwin American Legion team.
Brown elected to KHC director board

TOPEKA – Tony Brown of Baldwin City has been elected to the Kansas Humanities Council (KHC) board of directors. Brown is a professor of liberal arts at Baker University and is the state representative for the Kansas 10th District.
Fighting fire with fire

Before there was a fire department in Baldwin City, bucket brigades were used to battle fires, such as the one that destroyed the original post office on Eighth Street. That blaze was in 1908, its origin was unknown and the total loss was listed at $18,000. That was also when the residents of Baldwin City realized they needed a better way to fight fire.

On most construction sites, weather can either help or hinder the progress of the project. Recent dry weather has helped the new Baldwin Elementary School Primary Center project pick up for lost time during the wet spring.

Turning the calendar over today to July 1 officially brings the end of yet another extremely busy June in and around Baldwin City. It also hit me that I haven’t done a bits-and-pieces column in a long time and I certainly have them. So here it is.
No community fireworks display Sunday

It was announced last week that there will not be a Community Fireworks Display this year on the Fourth of July. That has not changed, said Steve Friend, Baldwin City Recreation Commission director.
