- WELLSVILLE — For the first time in three years, the Baldwin High girls’ basketball team has advanced to the Top Gun Tournament championship game. Baldwin beat Kansas City Christian 57-42 here Thursday night.

- Baldwin City residents have until Friday to renew dog tags for 2010 that expired Dec. 31. The renewals are available at City Hall and proof of rabies vaccination is required.

- Baldwin City resident TerriLois Gregory filed Thursday in Topeka as a candidate for 10th District state representative. Gregory, a Republican, is seeking the post currently held by Tony Brown, D-Baldwin City.

- It took an overtime victory over Wheatridge for the Baldwin Junior High School eighth grade varsity boys’ basketball team to remain unbeaten.
BJHS won 49-45 at home Tuesday.

- Since Eric Toot took over the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball team in 2006, the Bulldogs have played in the championship contest of their home tournament every season.
The Bulldogs entered this year’s Baldwin Invitational Tournament as the No. 4 seed. After back-to-back wins, they found themselves in their fourth straight BIT title game against another underdog, No. 6-seeded Bonner Springs.

- Although eight members of the Baldwin High School wrestling team placed in the top six Saturday, coach Kit Harris thought his squad took a step back this weekend.
Baldwin went 25-24 overall in matches and scored 139 total team points. That was good enough for a sixth-place finish at the Gerald Sadowski Invitational at Holton High School.

- WELLSVILLE — Winning here has become almost a routine for the Baldwin High School girls’ basketball team, at least as far as the first round of the Top Gun Tournament is concerned.
Every year Wellsville High has hosted the Top Gun, which is in its 20th season, the Bulldogs have won their opening game.

I fully agree with Lee Whaley’s letter in the Jan. 14 issue of the Signal. The people who voted for the new school have placed a big tax burden on the elderly, who are on a fixed income. Also, anyone who has property has seen a big increase in their taxes.

- In addition to efforts at Baker University, the Haitian relief effort is also getting a boost from the Vinland Airport.
Craig Smith, who flies out of the airport, is organizing an effort to get pilots to take donation boxes to various airports around the area. People in those communities can donate items and the boxes will then be brought back to Vinland.

- Last week’s public meeting at Vinland Elementary School might have been a one-time event, but it helped shed light about the district’s fact-finding committee.
A group of parents from Marion Springs Elementary School and VES organized the Jan. 19 meeting.
