- Merle Venable might become the first former Baldwin High School coach or teacher to have his or her name attached to a sports facility. Baldwin School Board Member Scott Lauridsen briefly introduced the idea to honor his former coach at the January meeting and it was an agenda item Monday night.

- Jesse Austin preserved his team’s perfect record in duals this season with a pin last Thursday night. The Baldwin High School junior wrestler won his 285-pound match as the Bulldogs beat Santa Fe Trail. It was the final event as a full team before Saturday’s Frontier League tournament.

- Despite dropping their third straight contest Tuesday night, the Baldwin High School boys’ basketball players are staying positive about the remainder of the season. The Bulldogs fell to 6-10 with their 70-40 home loss to Saint James Academy (11-6). They also lost at Eudora Monday and at Gardner on Friday night. Still, the Bulldogs are keeping spirits high.

- Baldwin High School ended its girls’ basketball contest at Eudora Tuesday night during the first 10 minutes. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. They expanded their margin to 15-2 early in the second quarter and eventually 23-10 at halftime. The Bulldogs (9-6) kept rolling over their rival as they beat Eudora 51-31.

- Mack Brown lived a weekend he may never forget. Instead of studying like many college students, the Baker University senior and four-year starting quarterback enjoyed the sun and warmth of South Beach, Fla., for a couple of days. He wasn’t just taking in the rays, he was there for a football game. Of course, not just any football game.

- When we heard about the effort underway to name the sports complex at Baldwin High School after legendary BHS football coach Merle Venable, we were thrilled. What a great idea and something that is certainly fitting for one of Baldwin City’s true icons.
