Come Jan. 1, Kansas motorists might want to think twice before picking up a cell phone to send or read a text message. If they are spotted by a law enforcement officer, that action could cost them a $60 ticket and in Douglas County another $93.50 in court fines.
Baldwin High cross country continues winning tradition

It’s tough to neatly sum up tradition, but in nearly every storied program — regardless of sport or level — there is one constant: winning. And over the years, Baldwin High cross country has done quite a bit of that. Under coach Mike Spielman, in his 19th season at Baldwin, the boys and girls cross country teams have won a whopping 17-combined Class 4A state championships.

Baldwin High School won four Class 4A state championships during 2010, Baker University women’s soccer made history and there was a major coaching change for the Wildcats’ last spring. Of that worthy list, the top sports story of the year and that was the BHS girls’ track state championship.

JaBryanna Wellington’s final seconds as a Baldwin High School track athlete will be long remembered. Those final moments were spent running stride for stride with Colby’s Emilea Finley as they sprinted down the home stretch of Cessna Stadium’s track.
LAC offering yoga, art classes

The Lumberyard Arts Center will offer two new classes in January for children and adults. Local certified yoga instructor, Jane Taul will offer “Yoga with Art for Children” beginning Saturday, Jan. 15 and running for three additional consecutive Saturdays.
Completion of U.S. Highway 59 among projects set for 2011

Many of the road construction projects that had Douglas County motorists sitting in traffic this year will return in 2011. The Kansas Department of Transportation will continue working on the massive project to build a new highway between Ottawa and Lawrence.

Baldwin City’s top story of 2010 dominated headlines Baldwin City Signal for nearly 11 months. On Dec. 13, the USD 348 Board of Education voted 5-2 to close the two rural elementary schools at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
