Baldwin City loses out on state trail grant

August 12, 2010

A new hiking and biking trail through the Signal Ridge subdivision into the FireTree Estates subdivision won’t be happening in the foreseeable future.

Baldwin City had applied for a grant to cover 80 percent of the estimated cost of $650,000. The city’s portion of that would have been $137,000.

However, when the Kansas Department of Transportation announced the winners of the transportation enhancement grants Monday, Baldwin City was not on the list.

City Administrator Jeff Dingman received a letter Tuesday from KDOT encouraging the city to reapply for the grant next year.

Good, I noticed no mention on how the last time they actually looked at the true cost of the trail it was over double what was listed in this article.

Actually, BaldwinDad, this does reflect the more than doubled price. Originally, the project was estimated to cost $240,000 to $270,000.

Ok, I see it does. Thanks Jeff for correcting me, I just assumed that it would have been mentioned how that from the time the Council initially got pitched this idea with the sales tax increase we voted for that the estimated price had doubled.

I hope now that since the bond was turned down the City Council will do the fiscally responsible thing and not waste anymore of our time and money on it.
