Running in Baldwin City has increased in popularity during the past several years and everyone has his or her own reason for getting into the sport. Some took up running in high school or college and have continued staying fit since those younger days.
BHS athletes, coaches anxious to start Monday

Monday morning will begin the annual rite of passage for all high school and junior high school athletics in the state. When it comes to excitement surrounding the first day of fall practice, this year is no different. Students and coaches from Baldwin High School and Baldwin Junior High School are anxious for Monday.
Smaller Frontier League changes schedules

For the third time in six years, the Frontier League has changed its size. A once large, 13-team organization has dwindled down to seven schools. In 2004, the league expanded from 10 to 13 teams with the additions of Ottawa, De Soto and Central Heights. In 2007, it shrank to eight teams as Central Heights, Anderson County, Osawatomie, Prairie View and Wellsville left to form the Pioneer League. Then Gardner-Edgerton announced its decision to leave the league in 2009.
Brown lauded for perfect attendance

State Rep. Tony Brown, D-Baldwin City, was recently recognized by House Democratic Leader Paul Davis for achieving attendance during the 2009 and 2010 legislative sessions. Brown also achieved a 100 percent voting record during both sessions.

Moore reflects on Vinland Fair tractor pull

When it comes to the Vinland Fair’s tractor-pull competition, no one can hold a candle to Max Moore. Moore, who is 92 years old and still actively farms his 300 acres just north and west of Baldwin City, was on the fair board when the idea was hatched to have a tractor pull back in the early 1960s.
School district enrollment increases at most schools

While numbers won’t be official for more than a month, the Baldwin School District’s enrollment might be up a couple dozen students from a year ago. Baldwin held its district-wide enrollment day Aug. 3, but all six schools have been enrolling students every day since Aug. 3.
