The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a heat advisory for Douglas County effective Monday at noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, the temperature hit 100 degrees with a heat index reading of 115 degrees. On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to be in the mid 90's and could reach triple digits. High dewpoint level will combine with the heat to raise the heat index into the 104 to 110 degree range.

In severe heat, dehydration, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke are possible for those with prolonged exposure to the conditions.

If you're planning to be outside Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening, take these simple precautions:

• Avoid prolonged or strenuous physical activity.

• Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.

• Wear light weight and light-colored loose-fitting clothing.

• Wearing a hat and using sunscreen will also help reduce the possibility of getting sunburned.
