De Soto football team rallies to beat Baldwin
DE SOTO — Dylan Burford caught two huge passes here Friday to help his Wildcats win their first game of the season.
The De Soto senior wide receiver teamed up with senior quarterback Daniel Peterson for the final two touchdowns of the Frontier League contest. They led the Wildcats’ (1-3) 14-7 comeback victory over Baldwin (0-4).
“It was on everyone’s shoulders tonight,” Burford said. “Our o-line kicked butt tonight, especially at the end. We won for David Bedford, because this was his last game as a senior.”
Peterson and Burford first hooked up for an 11-yard touchdown strike with 3:11 remaining in the game. Earlier in the drive, Peterson found Burford for a 43-yard pass on a busted third down play, where the snap went over his head.
After the score, Baldwin went three-and-out with a costly holding penalty on third down. A short punt gave De Soto the ball on Baldwin’s 43 yard line.
Four plays later, they converted a fourth-down-and-two with a five-yard pass. The Wildcats were out of timeouts, so they spiked the ball with 22 seconds remaining. On the very next play, Peterson scrambled and tossed a pass over the Bulldogs’ defense and into Burford’s hands in the back left corner of the end zone.
“That’s two weeks in a row that Dylan has had a couple big plays for us,” De Soto coach Tom Byers said. “If you just get the bal in his hands, he’s going to make a play for you.”
Baldwin broke the 0-0 tie during the middle of the fourth quarter. BHS junior Josh Hoffman broke free for s 39-yard touchdown. Baldwin took a 7-0 lead with 7:28 left in the contest.
“Our team is hurting right now, because we were so close,” Baldwin coach Mike Berg said. “We’ve scored the first touchdowns in the last two games, but have come up short at the end.”
De Soto will host Paola next week, while Baldwin will play at home against Ottawa. Both teams will celebrate homecoming next Friday.
