Council candidate forum set for March 25

March 5, 2009

A candidate forum featuring the eight people running for Baldwin City Council and mayor will be at 6:30 p.m. March 25 on the Baker University campus.

Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce President Ivan Huntoon said all candidates will be on hand for the forum in the audiovisual room in the Owens Musical Arts Building. There had been talk of separate forums for mayor and council candidates, but that was decided against, he said.

“We wanted to consolidate the forum into one so we could get a good crowd for both groups,” said Huntoon. “The candidates will be noticeably divided into two groups and questions will be asked accordingly.

“When we divided the forum into two nights last time, the same people showed up both nights,” he said.

Candidates for mayor are incumbent Gary Walbridge, Council Member Ken Wagner and one-time Council member George McCrary. Council candidates are Tom Farmer, Ric Gere, Russ Gill, Chris Nichols and Bonnie Plumberg. Incumbent Council Members Amy Cleavinger and Doyle Jardon did not seek re-election.

For Baldwin School Board incumbents Ruth Barkley, Bill Busby and Ande Parks are running unopposed for re-election. There will be no forum for board candidates.

In the next few weeks, the Signal will be running candidate profiles for the council and mayor candidates. They will also be online at
