Q. How long have you lived in Baldwin City and what brought you here?
A. 15 years. More affordable to buy land and build a house here than in Lawrence, where I previously lived.
Q. What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
A. Let’s move right past those teenage years, shall we? Opening that ominous-looking container hiding at the back of the fridge.
Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
A. I wouldn’t touch that if I were you.
Q. What two things would you want people to know about you?
A. (1) I am trying to complete some quilt tops. Some day, I may even finish and learn the next step—attaching binding and backing and actually quilting them. (2) I’d rather put on jeans and go fishing than dress up and go to a fancy restaurant.
Q. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A. A farmer, a jet pilot, a veterinarian, or an artist.
Q. What’s the best way for you to get away from it all?
A. If I’m back home in Michigan, I like to walk in the woods or go to Lake Michigan and walk at the edge of the water. In Kansas? I read, do crosswords, or get on the riding mower and tune out the world.
Q. What’s your ideal vacation spot?
A. The shore—great lakes or ocean, as long as there’s sand and the sound of water and shore birds. Sandown and Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, along the north Atlantic; Warren Dunes and Saugatuck State Park on Lake Michigan; Caneel Bay and Trunk Bay on St. John, USVI, in the Caribbean are some memorable spots I have enjoyed.
