Bulldogs drop second straight league contest

PAOLA — Baldwin High boys’ basketball team’s first game as a full squad wasn’t a success here Friday. The Bulldogs welcomed junior Zach Wright to the floor with open arms. He made a solid debut, but the Bulldogs still fell short against their Frontier League opponent, losing 60-56.
BHS girls nearly upset undefeated Panthers

PAOLA — Despite holding one of the top two opposing players to seven points, the Baldwin High girls’ squad was beaten here Friday. The Bulldogs (4-3) nearly beat the 9-0 Panthers on their home court. The Bulldogs lost 64-51 to the undefeated Panthers.
BHS seniors place high at Bobcat Classic

BASEHOR — Baldwin High School seniors Alan Callahan and Colin Busby held their own against many of the state’s best wrestlers at the Bobcat Classic here last weekend. The BHS pair both placed in the top five at the Basehor-Linwood High School tournament which is regarded as possibly the state’s toughest.

Justin Vander Tuig and Brandon Tommer electrified the crowd Tuesday night. Although the two teams combined to score 161 points, it was only four that nearly brought the house down. A pair of thunderous dunks by the Baldwin High School duo received loud ovations from fellow students and fans. Even their coach was thrilled after the game.
Five candidates file for city positions

There was a flurry of candidate filings during the past week, with three people filing for mayor, two for Baldwin City Council and one for Baldwin School Board. “You have a race for mayor,” said Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew.
Council to take another look at 2009 budget

After new Baldwin City Council Member Mike Magers took the oath of office, the council decided in light of the tough economic times ahead to take a look at the budget again and delay major purchases. Magers was sworn in to replace Tony Brown, who resigned in December. Brown’s now serving as 10th District State Representative in Topeka.
Local students advance to county spelling bee

Behind Dalton Good’s confident demeanor hid a nervous fifth grader Friday afternoon. His nerves of steel prevented a slip-up as he spelled word after word correctly. To make things more nerve-racking, the Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center student was competing against his classroom buddy, Nick Pattrick, in the finals.
Ballfields’ design closer to being approved

It appears the athletic complexes might be the first facilities of the Baldwin School District’s $22.9 million bond issue to have completed design plans. The DLR Group architects brought designs to Friday’s meeting with the primary bond steering committee.
David Tuley selected to play in Shrine Bowl

David Tuley’s size and strength on the offensive line were well known by opposing coaches, yet he helped the Baldwin High School football team gain 3,866 yards this fall. Tuley’s 6-foot-3, 300-pound frame was a force for Class 4A opponents as the Bulldogs finished the season 8-3.
