- A former Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy has received six months’ probation and will be required to participate in anger-management counseling after his September arrest at his Eudora home.

- It just got cheaper to sell liquor in Baldwin City.
On a 4-0 vote at Monday’s Baldwin City Council meeting, the fee charged to liquor stores and bars was reduced from $300 a year to $150. The question was first raised at the last meeting about why the fee was so high compared to the $100 charged to sell cereal malt beverages.

- During peak times in the morning and afternoon, the Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center has been the beneficiary of slower traffic passing by on U.S. Highway 56 recently.
In the past month, the Kansas Department of Transportation installed a new school zone on the highway north of BESIC.

- Monday night kicked off the Baldwin Junior High School boys’ basketball season and it was a great start for the Bulldogs.
In fact, BJHS went 3-0 on the evening against Osawatomie and Ottawa. The two varsity teams cruised to their wins, while the eighth grade junior varsity team won by one point.

- It’s rivalry time in the Frontier League, and more specifically … Douglas County.
The 2009 portion of Baldwin High School basketball begins Friday night here in Baldwin City. Friday’s contests will bring rival Eudora to town, with the first games beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The varsity girls will start around 6 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow around 7:30 p.m.

- With tough budget times ahead, both governing bodies for the Baldwin City community face a changing of the guard with the election in April.
On the city council, the mayor’s position and two council spots are up for election.
