For the first time in his four-year career, Alan Callahan will be wrestling the state finals.

On Saturday, Callahan will have a chance to rematch last week’s regional runner-up finish when he takes on Saint James’ Taylor Moeder in the 112-pound state championship.

In the semifinals, Callahan defeated Prairie View’s Bo Newport 7-2. Moeder pinned Eudora’s Cody Salzman to advance to the finals.

Callahan has finished third and sixth at state as a freshman and sophomore. Last year, he failed to medal. This year, he looks to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Kevin Callahan, who won his only state title last year as a senior.

The championship finals are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with the 103-pound weight class.

It’s official now, all five Bulldogs have at least won a match and will advance to Saturday’s competition. It’s the first time I can remember all BHS wrestlers winning a match at the state tournament.

Andrew Morgan, Andy Thurlow and Colin Busby all won their first consolation bracket matches. The next consolation round will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday here at the Bicentennial Center.

Next up for the Bulldogs is Alan Callahan’s semifinal match here shortly.

Senior Alan Callahan advanced to the Class 4A state wrestling semifinals just a bit ago with an exciting win.

Callahan defeated Scott City’s Francisco Antillon 11-6. He will now face Prairie View’s Bo Newport, whom he’s wrestled several times this year. The 112-pound semifinal round consists of the top four finishers at last week’s Spring Hill regional tournament. In the other semifinal, it’s Saint James’ Taylor Moeder and Eudora’s Cody Salzman.

BHS junior Josh Hanson lost a tough match in the quarterfinals. Hanson lost 5-3 to Abilene’s Courtney Strauss. Hanson tied the match 3-3 late in the third round with a takedown. Strauss quickly reversed him, winning the match.

Callahan will wrestle Newport at 4:30 p.m.
