- Carson Barnes wasted no time in earning his first decathlon medal on the national level. During his first-ever competition at a national meet, the Baldwin High School junior placed high enough to be a medalist.

- To the editor: I read, with great interest, the article dated July 16 regarding the meeting with Baldwin City Council, Baldwin School Board, Mayor, Douglas County Commission and Kansas Department of Transportation to discuss concerns over the new 60 mph speed limit on U.S. Highway 56.

- The Arms Corps of Engineers will be accepting public comment on the BNSF Intermodal Facility Draft Environment Assessment (Draft EA) and the preliminary evaluation until Sunday.

- On Monday night, the Baldwin School Board increased its mill levy by 9.519 mills and unanimously approved a $15.4 budget for the 2009-2010 school year. The school district’s budget increased from $14.8 million in 2008-2009 to $15.4 this coming school year.

- Julie Hill and Connor Twombly have been trying to do what they can this summer to insure a three-peat on the Class 4A girls’ cross country state championships. Two of the three top runners from the Baldwin High School team that won a second straight 4A state title were seniors. Now, this year’s seniors are working to keep that streak alive.
