Signal wins sweepstakes award from KPA
WICHITA — The Baldwin City Signal captured the sweepstakes award at the Kansas Press Association’s 2009 Awards of Excellence ceremony Saturday night.
The sweepstakes award signifies the top newspaper in each division based on circulation totals for daily and weekly newspapers. The Signal had a record 11 first-place awards, one second place and three third place.
“We are delighted to be chosen the best newspaper in our division again,” said Jeff Myrick, editor/publisher of the Signal. “It marks the fourth time the Signal has won sweepstakes.
“I am also especially pleased by Jimmy Gillispie’s break-through year with three first-place finishes,” said Myrick.
Myrick finished first in Editorial Pages, News Photo, Government/Political story, Headline Writing and Special Section (Maple Leaf Festival). Gillispie was first in Sports Pages, Sports Photo and Sports Story.
Gillispie’s winning sports photo was of Kevin Callahan jumping into the arms of coach Kit Harris after winning the Class 4A state wrestling title last year. Myrick’s winning photo was of the snarl caused by construction on Sixth Street this past summer.
The pair teamed up to win first place in Feature Package and Best Newspaper Web Site.
Myrick was second in Best Front Page and third in News Story. Gillispie was third in Sports Column Writing. Gerard Arantowicz was third in Editorial Cartoon. The Signal was also third in News and Writing Excellence.
