- OTTAWA — Home runs can boost a baseball team’s confidence … or deflate its spirits. Tuesday’s Frontier League doubleheader here saw both emotions. For the home team Cyclones, their four home runs in the first game built enough confidence to sweep the games.

- OTTAWA — An opening day rout of Wellsville might have been too easy for the Baldwin High School softball team, as it was swept here Tuesday by the Cyclones. BHS began the 2009 season with a 10-0 thumping of the Eagles on Friday. However, any confidence from that win was gone Tuesday night when they left Ottawa.

- Baldwin High School track and field teams came blazing out of the blocks at their first meet Friday. Every spring, the Bulldogs begin the season with the annual Baldwin Invitational. This year was no exception as both squads excelled at the opening meet.

- School records are already being broken by the Baldwin Junior High School track teams and they’ve only had one meet this season. All four of the Bulldogs’ squads opened their season with a triangular meet at Eudora on Tuesday. It didn’t take long for two eighth grade records to already fall.

- Alan Callahan’s career at Baldwin High was set up for a Hollywood-like ending at the Class 4A state tournament in Salina. With one more victory, Callahan would win his first state title, just like his older brother, Kevin, did the year before. He would also surpass his brother’s state record for career wins by one.

- Battling early season weather is always a challenge for the Baldwin High School boys’ tennis squad. Thus far, the young Bulldogs have impressed their second-year coach Justin Hoffman.

- Madeline Roger enjoyed her second trip to the 2009 Kansas Poetry Out Loud State Competition more than her first. She took advantage of less stress in her life and turned that into confidence. The Baldwin High School senior recently won the contest for the second consecutive year.

- Baldwin City voters checked in with their choices Tuesday in the election for Baldwin City’s mayor, city council and school board. We liked what we saw.
- Easter egg hunt set for Saturday on Baker’s campus

- If the weather forecast holds true, Baldwin City children will be celebrating Easter outside Saturday. For the past two years, the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Silent Basket Auction has been moved inside because of inclement weather. However, event coordinators are hoping for a warm, sunny day on Saturday.

- As expected, construction bids for the Baldwin School District’s November Bond Issue projects have come in bunches and competitively priced. Bids for two of the four projects came in last week. Supt. Paul Dorathy announced them at the bond issue committee meeting.
