Shoemaker leads youth wrestlers at state meet
Three Baldwin youth wrestlers placed in the Kansas Kids State Wrestling Tournament last weekend at the Topeka Expocenter.
The team's highest finisher once again was Baldwin Junior High School eighth grader Bryce Shoemaker. He finished in third place at 14-under 95 pounds.
Shoemaker lost his opening match 5-3, then won five straight matches to win the bronze. Included in his wins, Shoemaker had a revenge 1-0 win over the wrestler who defeated him in the first round. Shoemaker has now placed in the last six Kids State Wrestling tournaments.
Finishing in fourth place was fourth grader Thomas Lisher, who was fourth place at 10-under 79 pounds. Lisher went 4-2 overall in the tournament. It is his second time placing at Kids State.
Baldwin High School freshman Cody Sellers was the final placer for Baldwin. Sellers has been a two-time state qualifier and this is his first time finishing as a placer. He finished in sixth place at 14-under 105 pounds. Sellers went 22-4 on the junior varsity level for BHS, being named the team's JV Wrestler of the Year.
The club was coached by Kelly Hockey.
