Cuppa Java set for Friday

September 11, 2008

That's right, the annual Art Walk finale Cuppa Java is Friday.

Ordinarily, the Baldwin Community Arts Council's Art Walks are on the third Friday of the month. This is the second Friday.

"It was rescheduled to Friday to eliminate conflicts with the Bash," said Council President Sarah Wilson.

The Bash is the annual fundraiser for the Baldwin School District that takes place before the first home game of the season. Billed as the largest tailgate party in town, the Bash is Sept. 19, when the first home game for the Baldwin High School football team will be played.

That fast-forwarded the always popular Cuppa Java up a week. It will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Baldwin City. In addition to a variety of art on display, the BCAC serves up dessert and coffee - with the java being served in hand-thrown pottery mugs. Suggested donation for the unique mug and treats is $7.

"Arts Council members will be supplying cookies for dessert," said Lucretia Carlson, an arts council board member in charge of publicity. "Multiple people are donating coffee mugs."

But there's more. The band "Maria, Megan and Darrell" will be providing the music with their classic folk music style.

"It's going to be a fun-filled evening," said Wilson. "We've got a lot of different artists. We've got a band to provide music."

Plus, the Baldwin City Business and Professional Women are also getting involved.

"The BPW is sponsoring a Chamber (of Commerce) social with a watermelon feed," Wilson said. "So, there are two kinds of refreshments."

Some forecasters are predicting rain for Friday and if that happens, it will be held in the commons area of the high school. Normally, bad weather sends Art Walk and other events into the Lumberyard Arts Center. However, current renovation there doesn't make that an option this time.
