Blues, barbecue event set for Saturday

October 2, 2008

Saturday night will have its usual sounds, smells and tastes of good times for the fifth-annual Blues and Barbecue event at the Lumberyard Arts Center.

“We hope the people come out to enjoy the barbecue and the music, and we hope they get out to support the Lumberyard Arts Center Project,” said Gloria Roach, who is in charge of the music this year for the fundraiser. “We have a great line up this year. It’s blues and jazz from start to finish, but, oh, what variety.”

Barbecue and all the fixings will be served from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. or until it runs out. Hickory Creek Barbecue is again providing the food. There will be live music from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will be in the lumberyard in downtown Baldwin City.

“From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the band ‘Free Lunch’ will play,” said Roach. “When they take a break, we will have the duo of Alonzo and Gloria and also the duo Groundhoag and Jim. From 9:15 to 10, we will have the band ‘Forecast,’ which has Baldwin’s own Nate Deel.

“Another treat we will have is Jerry ‘Hobo’ Colclasure,” she said. “’Hobo was in a serious motorcycle accident earlier this summer and this will be his first time back with the band ‘Free Lunch.’ We are so excited that he will be back blowing the harmonica with us on Saturday.”

This year’s event will also have the first-ever poster coloring contest for the LACP. There will be winners in two categories — kindergarten through second grade and third grade through fifth grade. Entries must be brought to the Baldwin State Bank or Baldwin City Market by Friday.

First place winners will receive $15 and second place gets $10. Winners will be announced at Saturday’s event at 7:30 p.m.

The LACP is an ongoing effort to restore the downtown lumberyard into a home for the arts.
