BHS play to take stage Friday, Saturday

November 20, 2008

Once again it is time for the Baldwin High School fall musical. This year students are performing “Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical based on the classic fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.”

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Baldwin Junior High School auditorium.

The adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's story will be performed as a musical comedy. The musical takes place in a fictional medieval kingdom with a whole cast of fun and crazy characters.

The plot revolves around a queen who will not allow anyone to marry until her son marries, though she sabotages every princess who tries.

Katherine Cook and Beth Watts are co-directing the play. Auditions were held in early September and around 50 students were chosen for the cast and crew.

“It's exciting to see the show coming together,” Cook said. “We are polishing lines, blocking and working on choreography, and the students are very excited about costumes.”

The students usually practice from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., but lately practices have been going longer to make sure the cast and crew are prepared.

“We practice Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays,” sophomore Kara Protasio said. “Except for this week — we are practicing every day.”

A few of the lead roles were given to seniors Maddy Roger, Isaac Twombly, Brad Canterbury and Marianne Sansom.

The backdrop for the musical is being designed and created by senior Hali Lyons. Lyons is painting the backdrop for her senior project. It consists of a castle on a hill surrounded by water and mountains in the background.

“It's going to be the best backdrop ever,” Lyons said. “It's an actual student who is doing the backdrop, not just someone uninvolved who just wants to get it done.”
