A judicial nominating commission has forwarded names to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of two Lawrence attorneys in private practice and a federal prosecutor from Eudora to replace District Judge Jack Murphy.

Low prices don’t make for happy harvest

Fall harvest has gone well for the most part, yield-wise, for area farmers. Unfortunately, like the stock market, they’ve seen the prices paid for their grain crash.
No salt on downtown sidewalks

Winter’s ice and snow are just around the corner, but downtown businesses will have to have a new game plan this year for battling the elements. Because of the $1.8 million Downtown Streetscape Project replaced all the sidewalks downtown, traditional salt can not be used to melt the ice.

Baldwin Board of Education discusses next steps for $22.9 million bond

It was only six days after the Baldwin School District’s $22.9 million bond issue passed, but congratulatory comments were coming in from nearly everyone at Monday’s Baldwin School Board meeting. All of the parties associated with the bond issue and the upcoming projects attended the meeting. They expressed their feelings about the bond issue passing and how they were ready to get started.
BJHS wrestlers ready for league

Baldwin Junior High School wrestlers don’t have much time to get better as their season progresses, but they are making the most of it. They are only allocated three weeks to their season. During those three weeks, the Bulldogs fit in six meets. The final one of those is Saturday.
Holiday events ready to roll during November

If the weather wasn’t a hint, tonight’s downtown event will be sure to remind everyone winter is approaching quickly. With winter comes the holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Tonight is the official start of the holiday season in Baldwin City as the Holiday Hoopla kicks things off this year.
BHS season ends with 24-14 defeat

A second-half rally by the Baldwin High School football team nearly kept its season alive Saturday night at Liston Stadium. Baldwin rallied from a 24-point deficit to cut the lead to 10 points as the fourth quarter started. However, that’s as close at BHS would come to beating the Class 4A powerhouse Holton Wildcats.
