It’s like a scene out of a Christmas movie. Hundreds of boxes of food and canned goods are piled high on shelves in the basement of the First United Methodist Church. The Food Pantry is overstocked and the members of the church couldn’t be happier.

It hasn’t been 2008 very long, but - wow - have there been some highlights. Of course, the NCAA bowl games have been the primary events during the past few days. Sadly, only seven of the 28 bowls completed have been played in 2008.
Garcia commits to BC

Heather Garcia has one giant responsibility of her senior year off her back. She couldn’t be happier, too. “It’s so less stressful now,” Garcia said. “Now I can focus in on what I have to do for one school, instead of a couple of schools. Now I am set to go.”
Christmas Bird Count finds 79 species

The Baldwin Bird Club conducted its 66th annual Christmas Bird Count, sponsored by the National Audubon Society Dec. 16. The Christmas Bird Count was established in 1900 as an alternative to the traditional Christmas Day Hunt when people would go out to see how many different birds an individual could shoot in a day. The modern Christmas Bird Count has developed into a very useful tool for gathering bird population data during winter conditions in the United States.
Big news year for Baldwin

As far as news goes, Baldwin City was flooded with it during 2007. That was clearly evident when reviewing the year and during the first week of January there was a headline saying, “Couple survives helicopter crash.” How often does that happen?
Alumni assist Bulldogs in preparing for Cardinals

With a rivalry game coming up Friday, the Baldwin High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams turned to former teammates to help them prepare. Both BHS teams held alumni scrimmages during the past week, as the Bulldogs get ready to play at Eudora Friday night. It was the first of its kind for the boys’ team, but everyone enjoyed the action.
