Shop locally, stay home for holidays

Our View Editorial

December 4, 2008

Let’s take home for the holidays even a step further this year. Let’s try our best to shop at home every chance we get.

Some may scoff at that, but it can be done. In these tough economic times, it especially needs to be done.

Every dollar that stays in Baldwin City helps so many people. If we all do that, the help goes even further.

Our local businesses do so much to sponsor teams, events, donate to all sorts of fundraising projects, the list goes on and on all year long. Let’s pay that back in any way we can by thinking about shopping here first — and then, more importantly, doing it.

Of course, we’ve got specialty shops with that “something different” everyone is looking for every year. But there are “meat and potato” stores, too. Think about them before heading to Lawrence, Kansas City, Topeka or wherever. Shop locally.

As an added bonus, there won’t be the travel and the time in traffic to ruin the holiday spirit. Also, those long lines and crowded stores this time of year can be avoided. There are many advantages to shopping locally.

For those looking to do something even more different this year, there are a wealth of worthy causes that donations can be made to in the name of people on your Christmas list. Maybe this isn’t a “material” Christmas for everyone this year.

The list of good causes is lengthy here in Baldwin City. But the Community Food Pantry and Community Emergency Fund come quickly to mind. Times are tough. People are looking for help and that’s right here in Baldwin City.

Let’s help out. Let’s stay home for the holidays.

And if we'd quit raising taxes and passing bond issues we'd actually have money to spend in the community. Approximately $250,000 a year was taken out of our collective pockets with the bond issue - that's money that won't be going to the retailers.

Because it's so expensive to live here we all have to shop out of town and online. You can't have it both ways.

Torch,

Atleast we don't have to worry about people moving away and taking their money elsewhere. Nobody could sell their house in this town if they wanted too. People aren't going to want to move here anymore either when they find out how high our taxes and utilities are compared to neighboring communities.

Baldwin has become a retirement community for everyone here, but not by choice. Don't get me wrong, I like Baldwin but we're not moving in the right direction.

I don't want to be negative but what can we buy for Christmas in Baldwin other than food, fuel, antiques, & some gift shop items?

For the life of me I can not figure out how 5% of the new school bond money could be spent in Baldwin City. To me it seems like there is just know where to spend it.

Let's see our local school district stay local and use ALL local contractors for ALL their upcoming construction projects. Oh, I forgot, one of the big "plusses" about the bond issue is the very fact that they PLAN to use contractors from outside our city (state? country?) who will supposedly spend money in B.C. Riiiiiiight!

I agree with beevo 100%

If you want food, fuel, antiques or gift shop items, you can shop in Baldwin. If you want something you can use for a gift, you have to go to Lawrence, Ottawa, or Gardner.

Some people FAILED to open businesses here and because of some actions of certain people on a council, it is almost impossible to start anything here. Thank god that Ace Hardware can be persistent to get what they might have of wanted. Some people stood in the way of growth and progress. McDonald's is here only because they share with a gas station. (And not to mention powerful lawyers to overcome short sighted people). Who knows what Taco bell and Pizza hut did to get their spots! This town needs to ALLOW GROWTH. I know some of you just don't want any growth. Well, we can wait until we lose our home due to the higher taxes, cost of water, and who knows what else we can squeeze out of the people of Baldwin. Get a clue people. Let Baldwin EARN the label, BALDWIN CITY. Right now we are just Baldwin. There is no city here.

Yes, shop Baldwin.

Speaking of Ace Hardware have you noticed how neat and orderly it is up there, now go down to 8th. and King and look at that mess, they've been working on it for a year and a half. This is one big unsafe mud hole with open trenches, there isn;t anything safe about it. Where's Tina and Bill, why has this went on for so long. I bet Geary couldn;t get by with this up at the new hardware store the Bill and Tina show would be all over him, where's the safety committe?
