Elliott edges Hagerman for Palmyra Township trustee position

August 8, 2008

After the Douglas County Commission finished canvassing votes today, it's official. Sandy Elliott's write-in campaign ousted long-time Palmyra Township Trustee Rex Hagerman, who was also a write-in candidate. Johnson edged him by four votes, 28-24.

"She won," said County Clerk Jamie Shew, who was in Baldwin City today after attending the Vinland Fair. "She got 28 write-in votes, he got 24.

"It was the biggest thing of the canvass," said Shew.

Commissioners viewed provisional ballots today in all the races from Tuesday's primary election. That didn't change the outcome.

"There were no additional votes from the provisional ballots, so it stands at 28-24," he said.

Elliott, a Republican, will advance to the November election where she'll face Democratic opponent Brett Bond. Hagerman missed the filing deadline for the race and would have only needed three write-in votes to advance.
