Friends presents Book
TALK discussion series
Baldwin City Friends of the Library will present a three-part book discussion series on "Women Around the World." The series is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council that furnishes the books and discussion leaders.
The first meeting is at 7 p.m. Sept. 13. Thomas Prasch of Washburn University will lead the discussion of "The House of the Spirits" by Isabel Allende. Other novels include "The Country Girls" by Edna O'Brien, Oct. 11, and "So Long a Letter" by Mariama Ba, Nov. 8.

RWD No. 4 to
meet Tuesday
Rural Water District No. 4, Douglas County, will have its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the conference room of the district office.

Clearfield -- Ives youth
schedule meeting
The Clearfield - Ives Chapel United Methodist Youth group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Clearfield United Methodist Church. Youth sixth through 12th grades are invited.

Artist and Lecture
hosts Tommy Emmanuel
The Baker University Artist and Lecture Series presents Tommy Emmanuel, guitar, and Stephen Bennett, harp guitar, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rice Auditorium. For information contact or 594-8421.

Grief support for
women available
A grief support group for women will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Vintage Park meeting room. Meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Lions Club will meet
Wednesday evening
The Lions Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Vintage Park Center. Meeting dates for September are the 12th and the 26th.

Ives Chapel Evening
Circle to gather
The Evening Circle of Ives Chapel United Methodist Women will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Fellowship Hall. There will be election of officers. Gretchen Brumm is hostess.

Ives Chapel Sunday
School resumes classes
The Ives Chapel Sunday School children's classes will resume Sunday with a kick-off party at 9:45 a.m. A new youth class begins at 9:59 a.m. for junior and senior high students. Adult class is ongoing. Everyone is welcome to attend.

O.U.R.S. hosts
annual picnic
Oldsters United for Responsible Services will host its annual picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, Building 21.
The meal will be potluck with the club providing fried chicken. Members can participate in an open band jam. Members should sign-up at the Wednesday or Sunday dances.

Master gardeners
to host festival
Douglas County Master Gardeners will host a fall festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper, Lawrence.

Cards, pool, Bunco
available at center
Senior citizens can participate in several activities at the Douglas County Senior Center, 1221 Indiana, in Baldwin City.
There is a potluck dinner the first and third Friday of the month at 6 p.m. followed by card playing. On the third Tuesday of the month, senior citizens can play cards from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Pool tables are available for senior citizens from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays.
Bunco is now available at 1 p.m. the last Thursday of the month for senior citizens. The center prepares nutritious meals for senior citizens weekdays, except holidays, at the center or by Meals on Wheels. Suggested donation per meal is $2.50.
Menus are found in the Almanac Calendar on page A-2 of the Signal. Reservations for meals should be made 24 hours in advance by calling 594-2409.
