Letters to the Editor

October 25, 2007

To the editor:

I want to thank every one publicly for all of the great memories I have experienced over the last 28 years of Maple Leaf Festival parades as you have been my audience along the parade route. It is just like one big circus ring each time out.

I thank you for your laughter, smiles, frowns, and tears. I would not have had anything to respond to without your presence along the parade route. It has been real from the very first time I started down High Street in the1980 Maple Leaf Festival parade and to all the places it led me to clown and performed right up to my final parade in the 50th Maple Leaf Festival parade. What a great parade we had this year.

Thank you Maple Leaf Festival Committee and workers for all your hard work putting on a great festival. I also want to thank my family and friends for the Elmo fan club float, signs and t-shirts along the parade route.

I am convinced that this new parade route is going to work out just fine for the future. New ideas some time are scary but to improve on things we have to take chances. I thank you for that, too.

As the circus folks say "May all your days be circus days with blue skies, green grassy lots and may you always play to a straw house."

To the editor:

I want to commend Donna Curran, Maple Leaf Festival Chair, for her calm, unflappable manner when wading through the alligators and the porcupines that constitute Maple Leaf weekend for the committee.

She had such a calming effect on the committee members, the vendors and the volunteers in other areas that things just seemed to iron out. We had our most chaotic time on Saturday morning about 6 a.m, as usual, but with the High Street vendors all trying to get down High Street with the new booths in the center it was a bit worse. It's like sausage - it's really good, but you don't want to see how it's made.

To the editor:

An open letter to the citizens of Baldwin City.

For reasons undisclosed to me, my relationship with the Baldwin City Recreation Commission has been terminated effective Oct. 17. This brings an end to eight years of joy at being able to serve this community that I have come to love. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you and to watch the growth in our community during that time.

I have no intention of leaving the area and will seek to find other ways to serve this community and help bring to reality some of the dreams that we have all shared during that time.

Thank you for your love and support, even when we might not have always agreed with each other.

To the editor:

My name is Melissa Cavallari and I participated in the Maple Leaf Festival. This was my first year, and I want to let everyone know how much I enjoyed the festival. The organization was super, everyone was really nice and the town is really beautiful (I had never been to Baldwin City before).

All in all I had a wonderful experience. I found out about the festival on the online FNO network for crafters. I will definitely give you a five-star review. Thank you again for letting me participate. Hope to see all of you next year, Baldwin City is awesome!
