Kiddie Parade set for pre-grand parade start
Although the Maple Leaf Festival parade is a main attraction each year, the children get their chance to showcase their parade first.
At 10:30 a.m., the Kiddie Parade will begin at the Baldwin City Public Library, where the Kids Zone is located this year. The parade will head east on High Street, then north on Sixth Street for one block. Then the children will make their way back to the Kids Zone.
"We are hoping for lots of entries," Annie France, Kiddie Parade organizer said. "Many kids already know about it and families from out of state actually participate."
Along with the parade is the usual costume contest. The theme this year is "50 Years of Celebration" in conjunction with the festival's 50th anniversary.
Prizes are awarded to the top children. France said the judges have a difficult task each year.
"The kids are really into it," France said. "The costumes are imaginative and our judges always have a hard time choosing."
To participate in the Kiddie Parade, sign up at the Kids Zone, located at Seventh and High streets.
