Bulldogs improve, fall to Louisburg
Despite losing to Louisburg Monday night, Baldwin High School soccer coach Gus Wegner is happy with his team's improvement.
The Bulldogs (3-6) fell to the Wildcats (8-3) 3-1 at home. It was the second time the Wildcats have beaten Baldwin this year. After the loss, Wegner was pleased with his team's performance.
"We've improved," Wegner said. "When you play teams a second time, you wonder if you've improved and we have. I felt we made a real improvement from the first time we played them."
Both teams played an even first half, but Baldwin controlled the ball late in the half until tragedy struck. Louisburg attempted a shot, but it bounced in front of the goal and over the BHS goalie's head.
The goal came with one minute remaining in the first half.
"For the final 15 minutes of the first half, we headed the ball to the right people and we controlled the ball," Wegner said. "We told the players that made the difference for that part of the game."
Louisburg added its second goal early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead. Baldwin responded with its own goal midway through the half. Senior Alex Silva scored the goal off an assist from senior Dustin Schiller.
The Bulldogs had several other shots that were stopped by the Wildcats' goalie. Then the Wildcats scored their final goal, sealing the victory.
"We looked good and I was pleased," Wegner said. "I think they felt good. This is one of the better teams in the league this year."
The junior varsity team lost 3-0 to Louisburg Monday.
"It has been an interesting year because we have a lot of changes to the team, but over all I'm really proud of how the team has been performing," senior Ian Alsup said.
BHS has also hired a new assistant soccer coach for the remainder of the season. Coy Weege, 1996 BHS graduate, has been named the new assistant coach.
The Bulldogs hosted Tonganoxie on Wednesday, but the results were unavailable at press time. They will next play Eudora at 10 a.m. Saturday at home.
