One final victory
May 17, 2007
DE SOTO — Although the 2007 campaign came to an end for the Baldwin High School baseball team, it didn’t come without one final postseason win. BHS (4-15) finished its season with a 15-0 loss to No. 1-seeded Bishop Ward here Monday night, but it defeated Basehor-Linwood 16-8 first. “It was a great win,” coach Brock Hartshorn said. “We hit the ball well for the first five innings and we held on to win 16-8. I thought we hit the ball the best we have all year.” The Bulldogs’ first game was the play-in game to see which team would advance to play Bishop Ward later in the day. They used a 10-run third inning to propel them to the postseason victory. “It’s nice to get a win at the regional and advance,” Hartshorn said. “It felt really good. I am proud of the kids with how they came out and played knowing they were in that game. It could have gone either way with how our season has gone.”

Greensburg: ‘You just can’t believe it’
May 17, 2007
Even though they’ve seen what tornados can do, nothing prepared Ron and Mary Lou Klein for what they saw last week in Greensburg. “Even if you stood there, you wouldn’t believe it,” said Ron Klein. His sister, Marsha Klein and her family, have lived in Greensburg for around 20 years. Their home was all but destroyed by the F5 tornado on May 4 that left 95 percent of the buildings gone in the town of 1,500 in western Kansas. Three walls of the kitchen still stood after the storm. That was all. “There’s no way to describe it,” said Ron. “Even the smell,” added Mary Lou. “The creosote from the co-op and freezers full of decaying meat.” The Kleins spent a week in Greensburg helping his sister and other families with the massive clean-up effort. They returned to Baldwin City Saturday.
