ROBERT A. JOHNSON
Memorial services for Robert A. Johnson, 80, Pittsburg, were Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Pittsburg. Mr. Johnson died June 9, 2007, from cancer.
He was born June 1, 1927, at Courtland, the son of Laben and Ellen (Olsen) Johnson. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1945. He served two years in the United States Navy. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University in 1950. He was a member of the 1948 Kansas State basketball team that played in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Final Four.
Mr. Johnson was inducted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in March 2007, the Pittsburg State University Sports Hall of Fame in September 2006 and the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1986.
He married Kathleen "Dee" Currie Johnson Feb. 6, 1949.
He began coaching and teaching in 1950. Schools included: Bonner Springs High School, 1950-1951; Marysville High School, 1951-1957; Emporia High School, 1957-1960; College of Emporia, 1960-1966; Pittsburg State University basketball coach, 1966-1980; Pittsburg State University golf coach, 1977-1987.
Survivors include three sons, Chris, Fort Smith, Ark., Eric, Webb City, Mo., Russell, Pittsburg; three daughters, Ellen Wamser, Admire, Joni Jones, Baldwin City, Jerilyn Houghton, Polo, Mo., and nine grandchildren.
His wife, parents and three sisters died earlier.
Burial was at Carnahan-Garrison Cemetery, north of Manhattan. Memorials may be made to Angels Among Us, a local charity for cancer victims, and sent in care of Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
