Enrollment time is just around the corner
With the district-wide enrollment date just around the corner, the Baldwin Junior High School staff is again one step ahead because of its early enrollment program.
On Aug. 1, the Baldwin School District will enroll the majority of its students. Each school will be enrolling between the hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
While five of the schools will have all of its students to enroll, BJHS already has a portion of them done.
"We've been doing early enrollment for several years," BJHS Principal Connie Wright said. "We try to start it the Monday in the middle of July. We started it before then but it didn't work out too well, because people really weren't ready for it July 1. So, we moved it to the middle of July and parents really seem to like it."
The BJHS staff began enrolling students on July 16 and will continue through Tuesday. The early enrollment hours are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
Wright said her staff began the program several years ago to help relieve some of the stress on the main enrollment day, plus help families that might be busy or out of town on that day.
"This is just a convenience for parents that are going to be out of town or maybe involved in a fair," Wright said. "It really helps us get our numbers under control, because we would miss a lot of people on that day. Then we would spend August trying to catch those people that missed the day."
Last year, BJHS enrolled nearly half of the student body before the primary day came. That helped alleviate lines and waiting times at the school.
"It is so helpful," Wright said. "Last year, almost half our students enrolled before the big enrollment day. It was very helpful to us on the district-wide enrollment day to not have so many people trying to enroll. We are able to process them through quickly and not waste their time."
The district will begin most classes on Aug. 17, but all classes will start Aug. 20. The building staffs will have approximately two weeks after enrollment to prepare for the upcoming year. Wright said her staff is ready to start the year, although many of them have been busy this summer.
"I'm looking forward to school starting," Wright said. "It's been a very busy summer. I know it seems odd to some people, but we have to do lots of reports and finish state assessments. Between all of that, we have been very busy this summer."
