Robert P. Howell

Funeral services for Robert P. Howell, 81, Ottawa, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa. Mr. Howell died Feb. 18, 2007, at Ottawa Retirement Village.

He was born April 12, 1925, at East Stroudsburg, Pa., the son of John R. and Ethel Mary (Williams) Howell. He graduated from Chestnut Hill High School, Brodheadsville, Pa., in 1942.

He joined the United States Navy Dec. 7, 1942, and served during World War II as a Motor Machinist's Mate First Class and was honorably discharged April 16, 1946. He earned the World War II Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Campaign Medal.

He married Myra M. Sutherland Sept. 23, 1944, at Las Vegas. He moved to Ottawa in 1946. He worked in sales and bookkeeping at Joel Cutting Wholesale, Ottawa, as an accountant at John Deere and the Ford Dealership, Ottawa, and Price's Appliance Store, Ottawa, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Ottawa, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ottawa, Ottawa Memorial Post 5901, American Legion Warren C. Black Post 60, Ottawa, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 803, Ottawa.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Daniel, East Providence, Rhode Island; two daughters, Paula Moore, Baldwin City, and Marsha Howell, Hominy, Okla.; three brothers, William, Franklin, N.J., Forrest, Sarasota, Fla., and Kenneth, Dayton, Ohio; four sisters, Doris Wollstein, Honolulu, Joan Wells, Pocono, Pa., Jane Corley, Denville, N.J., and Ruth Cook, Franconia, N.H., 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

His parents, one brother, John R. Howell, Jr., two sisters, Esther Howell and Mary Jean Klosterhoff and one grandson, Robert L. Brady, died earlier.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association or First Baptist Church Radio Broadcast Fund and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Box 14, Ottawa, KS 66067.
