BHS, BJHS begin practice Monday
Baldwin High School and Baldwin Junior High School athletes better be ready to start their fall seasons with practices beginning just around the corner.
At 6 a.m. Monday, the fall sports' season in Baldwin kicks off with BHS football practice. The Bulldogs will be the first team to begin practicing Monday.
They will be practicing at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. for one week, then school starts the following week. Coach Mike Berg said his players are ready to stop working out at Bulldog Days and begin their season.
"I think they are ready to quit doing Dog Days and see what kind of shape they are in for football," Berg said.
The BHS football team will only beat the BHS cross-country runners by 30 minutes Monday. The cross-country teams will start at 6:30 a.m. Monday at the high school.
The reigning Class 4A state runner-up teams will have two-a-day practices Monday through Thursday at 6:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. With lofty expectations again, coach Mike Spielman is excited about getting the fall season underway.
"It's that time of the year again," Spielman said of fall sports. "We've had a lot of kids out running this summer, so I'm excited to see how we do."
The BJHS football squads will also start their seasons at 6:30 a.m. Monday. It will be their only day of practicing twice as they will also work out at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
During the rest of the week, the Bulldogs will only practice from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Another team that will be practicing during the afternoon, but out of the heat, will be the BHS volleyball squad. The Bulldogs will practice from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then they will begin their normal schedule of practicing from 3:35 p.m. to 5:35 p.m. on Thursday.
With several starters returning from last year and expectations from the incoming freshman class, coach Kelly Brown is ready for the upcoming season to begin.
"I am looking forward to starting practice," Brown said. "We will have a great fundamentally sound team. We've already improved from last year and should do well this year."
The other BHS team that will begin its season with afternoon practices is the girls' tennis squad. It will work out from 3:37 p.m. until 5:27 p.m. at the BHS tennis courts.
The final Bulldog team to begin Monday will be the BHS soccer team. The Bulldogs will practice from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, they will practice from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Beginning Thursday, they will practice at their regular time of 3:30 p.m. All practices will be held at the BHS soccer field, located north of the high school.
The last team to begin its season will be the BJHS volleyball squad. It will start practice at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in the BJHS gym. The squad will practice until 5:15 p.m. everyday.
All fall sports' athletes must have a physical and the form must be returned to the school's office or to the coach on the day of the first practice.
The Signal will provide season previews on each of the BHS teams during the next two weeks.
