To the editor:
This letter is in reference to recent events concerning our high school football team. Over the years, it has been my pleasure to watch the coaches and kids of this community build a respectable and competitive program under the direction of coach Mike Berg. Coach Berg started our youth football program (in which he still participates), helped raise interest and funds to start junior high football, and took a struggling high school program to Frontier League Champions and post season play.
Coach Berg built this program at all levels by helping develop quality individuals, who respect themselves and others, and will one day become productive citizens. Recent events are completely inconsistent with coach Berg' s teachings and philosophies. Anyone who knows Coach Berg understands this is true. For those of you who do not, it is one of the few things in life in which you can rest assured.
Coach Berg has spent countless hours with the young men and women of this community in the form of teacher and coach of different sports. He has undoubtedly influenced the lives of many in a positive way. He has done this because it is the right thing to do. He will continue to do the right thing.
Of course, the concern is for the safety and welfare of the individuals involved. As we all know, quality individuals sometimes make mistakes. Coach Berg will lead them through this as well. Please join me in pledging our community support for coach Berg and his team as they face one of their more difficult challenges.
