BHS boys take third at home meet

September 21, 2006

The Baldwin High School boys' cross country team was right at home on Saturday.

The Bulldogs were able to compete at the Baldwin City Municipal Golf Course last weekend, coming away with a third-place finish among many larger schools.

"I thought we ran very well with the tough competition and tough weather," coach Mike Spielman said. "The main thing (to focus on) is that we keep closing our gap down from one to five and that everybody gets their race strategies figured out."

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior Chris Elniff, who won the race in a time of 17:04. Next was fellow senior Caj Kueffer, who finished ninth with a time of 17:49. Not far behind Kueffer was junior Aaron Karlin, finishing 10th in 17:53.

Finishing fourth for the Bulldogs was sophomore Brad Canterbury in 24th. Rounding out the scorers was senior Paul Minor who finished 47th. Also competing in the varsity race were sophomore Blake Randels and senior Michael Thurlow, finishing 53rd and 59th respectively.

The team finished third of nine teams with 89 points to Shawnee Mission West's 73 and Lawrence Free State's 84. The meet included six Class 6A schools, one Class 5A school, and the Class 3A team that won state last year.

Canterbury was also happy with the team's finish.

"We performed really well considering the competitors, the weather and the hard course," Canterbury said.

Other members of the team competed in the junior varsity race Saturday. Sophomore Blake Shields finished 47th with a time of 20:32. Freshmen Patrick Pinault and Andy Woods crossed the finish line in 50th and 61st respectively. Senior Josh Times and junior Alex Coffey were right behind in 62nd and 63rd. The final competitor for the Bulldogs was Kedar Sandal who finished 74th.

Woods was content with the team's finish considering the circumstances.

"I think we did pretty good since we were running against all of the bigger schools," Woods said.

The JV team finished seventh of eight teams on Saturday.

Next action for the Bulldogs is the Prairie View Invitational at 4 p.m. today.
