MARY LEE JOHNSON

Funeral services for Mary Lee Breyfogle Johnson, 89, Chanute, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Chanute. Mrs. Johnson died Oct. 19, 2006, at her home.

She was born Sept. 29, 1917, at Chanute, the daughter of Frank Lee Breyfogle and Mary Lizzie Smith Chastain Breyfogle. She graduated from Chanute High School and from Baker University in 1940 with a Bachelor of Music degree. She was a member of Lambda Chapter of Delta Delta Delta national sorority that was founded at Baker in 1895 by her aunt, Grace Breyfogle Jones. She was an accomplished violinist. She taught at Hanford, Calif., schools, Mokan, Mo., schools, Morehead and Williamsburg, Kan., schools and Chanute Public Schools, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Chanute.

She married Wallace Johnson June 24, 1964. He died April 19, 1972.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters: Lewis Breyfogle, Beecher Breyfogle, Homer Chastain, Mary Chastain Butell, Nellie Chastain Johnson, Henry Chastain and Edward Chastain.

Visitation is at 7 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, Chanute. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Chanute. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to the Chanute Public Library.
