Children’s parade has new route, too
A group of youths will be giving a preview of the Maple Leaf Festival parade with the Children's Parade Saturday morning.
Annie France, children's parade organizer, hopes the crowd will watch the children's parade before the grand parade.
"I'm hoping people are going to be a bit more excited this year," France said. "It's a big deal for the kids."
At 10:45 a.m., the parade will begin at the Kids Zone, located at Seventh and Grove streets. Then it will head one block east on Grove Street, turn south on Sixth Street and then west on High Street. It will finish back at the Kids Zone.
The route was changed this year after the grand parade route was adjusted.
"We moved it down to Sixth Street, because everyone will be set up for the big parade," France said. "We want people to be able to watch the kids."
The parade is open to children from birth through fifth grade. Each child can enter Saturday morning and should report to the Kids Zone by 10:15 a.m.
Each participant is encouraged to bring a bicycle, wagon, costume or other vehicle decorated to the theme. The organizers are asking children not to bring animals into the parade. The theme is the same as the main parade, "Discover New Pathways."
All participants will receive a gift bag of treats for entering.
