Lunch for veterans
to be served
All area veterans are invited to attend a complimentary Veterans Day luncheon at Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center Friday. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Ives Chapel Day Circle
to have meeting
Ives Chapel Day Circle will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Fellowship Hall. Dolores Kalb will lead the program, "Showing Our Thankfulness."
A World Thank Offering will be taken. Rosann Elder will lead craft making. Jeroldene Martin is hostess.

Clearfield -- Ives youth
schedule meeting
The Clearfield - Ives Chapel United Methodist Youth group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Clearfield UM Church. Youth sixth through 12th grades are invited.

Vinland FCE to
gather for meeting
The Vinland Family Community Education unit will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Vinland Methodist Church with Margie Schultz as hostess. Lola Ford will present the lesson, "Every Step Counts."

Benefit scheduled
for Sherrie Wood
A supper will be held beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center to assist Sherrie Wood with medical expenses. Supper will include chili, soup, dessert and drinks. A freewill donation will be accepted.

Shopping bazaar helps
youth missions
A Holiday Shopping Bazaar to benefit First United Methodist Church Youth Missions will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Eighth and Grove streets.
Participating businesses will donate a portion of their profits to the mission project. The businesses are: Discovery Toys, Pampered Chef, Usborne Children's Books, Silpada Jewelry, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Longaberger Baskets, Premier Designs Jewelry; Tastefully Simple and more. Brunch items will be available.
The First United Methodist Church Praise Choir will provide music. Free childcare is available. Contact the church at 594-6612 for information.

Bird club to have
monthly meeting
The Baldwin Bird Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the multipurpose room at Baldwin Elementary School Primary Center. The program, presented by Calvin Cink, chairman of the Biology Dept. at Baker University, is entitled "Birding the Big Island of Hawaii." Plans will be made for the annual Baldwin City Christmas Bird Count set for Sunday, Dec. 17. Contact Roger Boyd for information at 594-3171.

AARP Chapter 1696
sets meeting day
AARP Chapter 1696 will meet at 11 a.m. Nov. 17 at the Lawrence Country Club. The Lawrence High School Chorale will provide the program. Call (785) 865-3787 for reservations.

ECKAN Agency to
distribute food
The ECKAN Agency will distribute food items to eligible Douglas County commodity participants from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 30 at the American Legion Hall. Distribution is later because of the holiday.

Kansas hall of fame
accepting nominees
Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame is accepting nominees for the Class of 2007 in each of the 12 Kansas districts. They must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2007.
Nominees should show evidence of: 1) outstanding teaching and/or administration; 2) positive interactions with students and parents; 3) qualities that set him or her apart from other educators; 4) continued pursuit of educational opportunities throughout his or her career; 5) conducting workshops and/or professional development activities for parents, teachers or administrators; 6) involvement in community activities; 7) educational recognition and awards.
Nominees must have been a Kansas educator for a minimum of 25 years. The induction ceremony will take place June 2, 2007, at the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame in Dodge City. Hogsett wins first
in speaking contest
Gary Hogsett, Baldwin City, won first place in a humorous speaking contest in Topeka when he competed against competitors from 98 other Toastmaster clubs throughout Kansas and Missouri.
Toastmaster members meet regularly to practice and improve their public speaking skills. Hogsett now will compete at a Regional Humorous Speaking Showcase in Chicago. Hogsett is an energy management consultant. He has spoken at the World Energy Engineering Conference, the Kansas Renewable Energy Conference and the Lawrence Home Energy Show. He has spoken in 10 humor contests taking home nine first place trophies and one second place trophy.

Bible study meets
at Lighthouse Baptist
The ladies Bible study group meets at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at Lighthouse Baptist Temple. Community women are welcome to attend.
