Fire damages rural home
Fire badly damaged the inside of a southern Douglas County home Thursday afternoon and forced the owner to move into a trailer on the property.
Walter Babbit, the owner of the home at 1288 N. 200 Road, was eating his lunch outside when he returned inside the house and found smoke in the living room, said Lt. Kari Wempe, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff's office.
The man then turned off the house's power and called for help. Firefighters with Willow Springs, Palmyra and Kanwaka townships responded to put out the fire, Wempe said.
The single-story home's interior suffered smoke and fire damage. Firefighters reported the house was not a total loss, but it was uninhabitable for now, Wempe said. Firefighters will continue to investigate the fire's cause and damage amount.
