Funeral services for JoAnn Madl, 81, Baldwin City, were Monday at Annunciation Catholic Church, Baldwin City. Mrs. Madl died March 23, 2006, at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 17, 1924, at Monte Vista, Colo., the daughter of Roy and Ester (Ferguson) Merchant. The family moved soon after her birth to a farm located northwest of Baldwin. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1941 and from business college in 1942. She worked at Sunflower Ammunition Plant in De Soto for two years.

She married Robert L. Madl Oct. 20, 1943, at Saint John's Catholic Church, Lawrence. He survives of the home.

She was active in Douglas County Home Demonstration Units and followed her mother as a member and officer of Eastern Star. She was organist at Annunciation Catholic Church for many years. She served on the Douglas County, Palmyra Township election boards.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Herschel Merchant.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Ronald and his wife Linda, Manhattan, Duayne, Lake Quivira, and Rick and his wife Christina, Baldwin City, and five grandchildren.

Burial was at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Baldwin City. Memorials may be made to Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, PO Box 64, Baldwin City, KS 66006.
